Logo Design – Mandarino Peeled & Disected

Every now and then I’ll reveal some of the alternative concepts presented to a client during the design process. This is one of those times!

My aim in this project was to create a simple but effective logo mark which communicates and emphasizes the Mandarin fruit. Due to it’s circular / oval shape it was pinnacle to step away from the use of basic shapes presenting the idea in a more abstract form.

The first logo mark (from left to right) sees a cross section of a mandarin revealing it’s segments. Although I wished to keep the design as minimalist as possible the circular edge was mandatory to distinguish the circular segments from being a flower. The circle also helps give ruse to the negative space being the “white substance” between the peel and the fruit.

In the next design I decided to use a bean shape to depict the mandarin and it’s natural stalk indentation. This design was made significantly abstract by replicating the same shape used for the body of the fruit to form layers of lighting which resulted in a surreal tunnel like effect. The leaves compliment the design emphasizing a psychedelic vibe.

The final design takes on a more realistic form of the fruit but takes on an abstract form to depict the light source to the left of the mandarin which also shares the same bean shape as the mandarin segment. The green stalk base takes on the form of a star conveying a subtle message of superiority.

Hiiibrand Award – Won Silver!

I was pleased to see that four of my logo designs were up for nomination for the Hiiibrand Professional Logo Design Award 2011 as discussed here some weeks ago.

The award includes both Professional Level & Student with the following categories in each: Brand, Logo and Package. Collectively there were 1,103 pieces of work submitted. Within the Professional Logo category in which I entered, there were a total of 17 countries and regions, 70 design agencies / designers and 96 work pieces up for nomination.

The winners were announced on the 4th May by the Hiiibrand jury.

Upon checking the results I was overwhelmed to discover that my Clickplant logo was above 94 of those pieces scoring a Silver Award alongside Peter Vasvari of Hungary and Shusuke Matsubara of Japan.

It’s an honor to have won this award, not to mention having those larger players in the design industry judge my work.

Winners are due to be published in “New Graphic 29″ available for the Hiiibrand Store.
